Abstract

The Syrian Civil War has created the worst humanitarian disaster since the end of World War II, sending shock waves through Syria, its neighbours, and the European Union. Calls for the international community to intervene in the conflict, in compliance with the UN-sanctioned Responsibility to Protect (R2P), occurred from the outset and became even more pronounced following President Assad's use of chemical weapons against civilians in August 2013. Despite that egregious breach of international convention, no humanitarian intervention was forthcoming, leaving critics to argue that UN inertia early in the conflict contributed to the current crisis Syria, Press Framing, and The Responsibility to Protect examines the role of the media in framing the Syrian conflict, their role in promoting or, on the contrary, discouraging a robust international intervention. The media sources examined are all considered influential with respect to the shaping of elite views, either directly on political leaders or indirectly through their influence on public opinion. The volume provides a review of the arguments concerning appropriate international responses to events in Syria and how they were framed in leading newspapers in the United States, Great Britain, and Canada during the crucial early years of the conflict; considers how such media counsel affected the domestic contexts in which American and British decisions were made not to launch forceful interventions following Assad's use of sarin gas in 2013; and offers reasoned speculation on the relevance of R2P in future humanitarian crises in light of the failure to protect Syrian civilians.

Abstract

In the first centuries of the Common Era, an eclectic collection of plain and embellished underground and aboveground tombs filled the cemeteries of the Roman province of Syria. Its inhabitants used rituals of commemoration to express messages about their local identity, family, and social position, while simultaneously ensuring that the deceased was given proper burial rites. In this book, Lidewijde de Jong investigates these customs and the belief systems that governed the choices made in the commemoration of men, women and children. Presenting the first all-inclusive overview of the archaeology of death in Roman Syria, the book combines spatial analysis of cemeteries with the study of funerary architecture and decoration, grave goods, and information about the deceased provided by sculptural, epigraphic, and osteological sources. It also sheds a new light on life and death in Syria and offers a novel way of understanding provincial culture in the Roman Empire.

Abstract

This book is designed to illuminate one of the most enduring and complex international conflicts in the 20th and early 21st centuries. It begins with a discussion of historical roots, noting four reinforcing levels of conflict: incompatible belief systems, Islam and Judaism; competing national goals; inter-communal rivalry; and discordant pledges to the principal adversaries by Great Britain during World War I. An array of political and military acts from 1933 to 1947 culminated in the UN Partition Resolution (29 November 1947), Israel’s proclamation of Independence (14 May 1948), and the beginning of the first of nine Arab/Israel wars the next day. The book then analyzes the following dimensions of this unresolved conflict: the struggle for Jerusalem since 1947; perceptions of the conflict and the conditions of peace by leaders and officials; their acts of violence and of political hostility; the Arab/Israel military balance and their behavior during the two most significant wars (June 1967 and October 1973); the mostly-failed attempts at conflict resolution from 1937 to 2014; the causes of continuing deadlock, except for two cold peace agreements (Egypt-Israel, Israel-Jordan), and the author’s assessments of the way out of the seven-decade impasse. The book concludes with an analysis of Israel at 68, mostly its policies and behavior towards the Palestinians from 1967 to 2016. .
